pencilsThe professor sat behind his desk, grading exams. The stack of exams yet to be graded was still much higher than the stack already completed.  He was frustrated by how few of the students really seemed to understand the subject matter.  He did his best to make his classes enjoyable and informative, yet the majority of the students were unable or unwilling to put forth the little effort that was all he felt should be necessary to excel in his class.

It was his scheduled office hours, so he was not terribly surprised when there was a knock on his door.  "Come in," he called.  He hoped it was not a student trying to negotiate for a better grade.  That situation was always uncomfortable.  The students wanted to get good grades, and he also wanted the same outcome.  He would offer whatever help he was able to provide, but that did not include being more lenient with how graded his exams.

The student entered his office and closed the door behind him.  The professor took off his glasses and looked up questioningly at the student.  The student sat down in the hard wooden chair in front of the professor’s desk and put his books on an empty spot on the professor’s desk.

"What can I do for you?" the professor asked.
