The rumble of the car’s engine was beginning to grate on him, so he reached for the stereo and tuned in his favorite radio station. He knew the buttons well, so he did not have to take his eyes off the road. This was a good thing, because the sleet was coming down hard and wet, pinging off the windshield and roof of the car, and making the roads treacherous.
His mind was wandering, and he repeatedly had to force himself to pay closer attention to the act of driving.
"I really should get more sleep," he thought, and it wasn’t the first time that day he had thought that.
A song came on that he had not heard in a long time, and it made him smile. He had forgotten how much he enjoyed it. The rhythm, melody, harmony all combined to lift his mood tremendously.
There was a sudden movement on the left side of the road which caught his attention, and he turned his head toward it.
