Ah ha! Reading “The Postman” today (home sick) and immediately did a search for the same after reading that passage. (big Firefly fan myself).

There seems to be _some_ historical context for the word.

Sounds like you wrote this as it happened. I’ve seen brief moments of that, where there’s a room full of people and suddenly all the conversations pause and there’s this almost painful silence, then someone laughs and the hubbub returns.

@Lara: Yes, it’s a different boy. Unless the original The Giving Tree was about the boy reading it in the first paragraph. Which would be very meta.

And to all who felt that the boy in the original was very selfish: I agree, and I’ve read the same from others who felt that way as well. Not really sure what point it was trying to get across.

This was great… had me hooked the entire time – and I didn’t make the connection until the end… even with the picture… I must be slipping!

Lawn ornaments are just scary… whether they move, talk, or just remain still… they scare the heck out of me.

What a race. I figured he wasn’t running from anything so mundane as the police, or he might give up after the broken ankle. Only someone running for his life would keep going like that. Very tense.
